Congratulations on making Runway! How does it feel to know that all of your hard work is finally paying off?
It feels amazing to know that all my hard work has paid off because I sure have had a lot of sleepless nights.
Can you explain your collection and mood board to us?
As time evolves so does the world around us, resulting in change. Whether it’s reverting back to the past or exploring the new possibilities of the future: a new idea is always to come. The theme of RUNWAY 12 is Reawakening, which is “ a recognition, realization, or coming into awareness of something.” My collection is inspired by the direction that consumers are leading the industry. The WGSN trend Denim Forecast S/S 20: Create Code is a depiction of exactly that. As the industry is increasingly moving towards a more sustainable and multi functional mindset, so do consumers. The design direction of my collection is to create ready to wear garments inspired by streetwear and paired with urban utility styling. Reawakening is illustrated in my collection through the patchwork fabric as well as the utility styling incorporated throughout the garments. This is symbolic to the theme because patchwork is a past concept that dates all the way back to the 1700s, and utility wear dates back to the 1940s. Patchwork was once used as a way to preserve clothes and overall keep people warm. When times changed and more textile factories began to open up yarns and fabrics became more affordable. Utility wear came about when the second world war caused people to ration there clothing, due to the shortage of essentials. As an outcome people became more expressive with their style, evolving to one that uses fashion to express individuality. Fashion will always be an outlet the zeitgeist. What we wear tells people who we are and how to treat us. Through my collection I want to bring awareness to the impression that fashion plays a role in our daily lives. My objective is to overall create a collection that fuses the past and present, while reawakening individuality.
What does REawakening mean to you?
To me Reawakening means appreciating the old when creating the new.
What can you tell us about your collection this year and how have you incorporated our theme?
My collection "No Regrets" is about living everyday to its entirety. My collection is about taking the edgy and uniqueness of streetwaer and combining it with timeless, classic silhouettes. I used reawakening in my collection through combining the old and the new. I thrifted denim along side with purchasing new fabric to create my pieces.
I'm sure everyone would like a little behind the scenes on the creative process of creating your garments! Is there anything you can tell us?
The first thing I did was come up with a way to connect reawakening to the abundance of ideas that I had. Then after I narrowed it down to a solid concept, I came up with my mood board, my color concepts and fabrics. And after ripping about five pages out of my sketch book, I came up with a total of 8 designs, which have been narrowed down to six and begin the process. After flat patterning and numerous fittings, my designs began to come to life.
Below are some photos of the process Angelina went through to create her collection! We can't wait to see her collection walk down the runway this Saturday at the show!
